The morning talks, the various ceremonies, exposure to art and architecture, music and science, the visiting troupes like Shakespearena, MRI..... list is endless. Can never forget Mrs. Chelliah's maths classes or Mrs. Clarke's history which taught us about the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome. Mrs maragatham who taught us homescience .... and ofcourse Miss appasamy who taught us english using Reading and Thinking....

I will purchase it if you can spare it or xerox it the next time I am in Chennai.

Please contact me at reddusha@gmail.com

Dearest Vidyo!

I passed out 42 years ago!

A few weeks after my 4th birthday my father took me to Vidyo and from that day
for 13YEARS - Nursery, K.G.,and Standards 1-11 , I studied there.I loved every day of it, and hated holidays when I had to stay at home.

This was from 1955 -68 !

The school grounds covered a much larger area, right upto the Kodambakkam Highroad.

The mango-groves, the pond, some rare trees like the cannon-ball tree,umrella-tree, and some whose names I do not know, made it a mini botanical garden.

Some times teachers would hold their classes under the mango trees in the 'mango-thope'.

We learnt SO MUCH more than mere book-lessons.

Miss Appasamy, the daughter of parents who were visionaries, who was herself a visionary and idealist, was our head-mistress.

Except for the last few years of my days at Vidyo, Mrs.Paul Appasamy, the fouder was alive, and personally guiding her.

The school was run on Gandhian principles with no religious prejudices. Mrs.Paul Appasamy was the sister of KUMARAPPA, aGandian and freedom-fighter.
It was her declred principle to 'turn out all-rounders', and not and not give too much of importance to 'ranks' and high scores in public exams.

We were trained in gardening, singing both classicl-carnatic music and light western,we had PT classes and every one could play some basket-ball, thow-ball,jump the hurdles, thow the discus and spear! Every one learnt needle-work and some handicraft too.
There was the 'Beauty- Corner' each class had to maintain for a week in turn, which helped us try our hand at decoration.

The Children's day celebrations were fun and parents visited us, and each class and each student prepared something original, using her imagination and skills.
We learnt to do some cooking, and draw KOLAMs too! How the home-science classes of Mrs Maragatham have helped me in subtle ways when I became a house-wife! And these were not part of our state-syllabus, but specially desinged for us by our School.

We had games time after class- hours for an hour from 4.10 pm to 5.10.School started at 9.10 am.After spending 8hours in school my friends and I would reluctantly go back home.

Oh! I have to mention the 'MORNING-TALK' the teachers used to read to us interesting and inspiring passages from various sources.Mrs. Clarkes's were the best.

The candle-light ceremony, U.N.Day.and other celebrations in the OLD_HALL can never be forgotten by any one who participated in these. The auditorium does not have the ambience that old-hall had.

As little girls we loved and admired the 'akkas' who came to 'mind' us, and later as akkas ourselves, we were loved and admired by the little girls.

Learning and home-work those days was not much of a burden.
Of course the partiality that some one has mentioned existed in those days, must have existed before and will never cease to exist where ever there are teachers and students.

The approach to education has changed drastically in the last few decades, and no one cares for the man-making education Vidyo gave us. Today we want marks-generating, career and profession-oriented education only. I DO NOT KNOW HOW VIDYO HAS COPED WTH THIS AND ADAPTED TO THIS DEMANND.

We had no uniform in those days as Miss.Appasamy declared the children must be dressed like butter-flies!

What I disliked most were our school-colours-GREEN AND YELLOW!

My teachers were Miss Asirvadam(nursery) mrs Rajam, miss Williams, Miss James, Miss Daniels, (primary scho l) Miss Appasamy, Mrs Clarke, Mrs Daniels,Mrs Chellaiah, Mrs Maragatham, Mrs Viswanathan in high-school. I have to mention my English-music teachers Miss.Doraisamy and Ms.Salsbury whose songs I still sing today! I am ashamed to admit that I forget my Tamil teacher's name. I thank all of them and my Mother-Vidyodaya for nurturing me for 13 years and making the most of the raw material that was me.

V.R.Rukmani

Hi,

I was a student of Miss G.V. Sarojini at KV CLRI, Madras, during the 1970s. She is now based in the Bronx, USA. She was a Hindi Pandit at Vidyodaya from 1952 to 1965. Miss Sarojini taught in the KV system from 1966 to 1980, she then emigrated to the US. She taught special needs children in the New York City Schools.

If you know Miss Sarojini and would like to get in touch with her, I will be glad to send you her details.

Best regards,
Vijay.

Who said Gurukul is not there !! it is still there, one wants to find it please go to Vidyodays Schools. Iam a proud Vidyodayan!!! What iam today it is the gift that my school had given me. I will rejoice and feel proud to be studied in the prestigious school.

Teachers are down to earth always!! good company of friends sharing, helping, competing, servicing, learning and playing almost all VERBS i had learnt in Vidyo only.

We can't forget our Mango Grove, our Auditorium, each and every class rooms, our Canteen, small ponds and Play ground .Even after 12 - 14 years still remember.

Vidyo rocks!!!

Saranu Saranu deva deva saranu sarunu deva ...
"Vidyodays yudyamandu velayinbamu sala" Bhakthula samprarthana midi paalimpamu vega"

Thank you so much for jolting my memory. After 52 years of not even thinking of this Vidyodaya prayer, suddenly a few more of the words popped into my head:

Nitya Ranjana Dhina Bhushana Nirupama Guna Seela,

Vidyodaya Udyamandhu Vilayimpumu sala,

Saranu Saranu Deva Deva Saranu Saranu Deva

Bhakthula Samprarthana midi Paalimpumu Vega

Saranu Saranu ----------------------------------

If anyone recollects any more lines, please feel free to add to these.

Hi,

CBSE

I attended the school and stayed in the hostel from 1978 to 1980. I was in the 4th standard. The hostel warden at that time was Mrs. Jijibai. I have wonderful memories of the entire experience. There was history teach by the name of Mrs. Chaco who was an angel and made me feel like a princess. There was also a hindi teacher who was so patient with me and helped me pass the hindi exam. I was certainly spoilt by both my classmates as well as the teachers. This period of my life was like a train passing through and what a great time it was. Thank you everyone.

Vaijayanthi

Hi, i think you were my sister Devi Kamakshi's class mate. Do you remember ? I remember you as my senior. Iam ganesh I studied from 1965-71 till class 5. My sister passed out from Vidyo. Greata school. I do remember maam jijibai and others. Do you remember maam appasamy who was princi....she was very old that time and very kind. Do you remember ms swarnam music teacher. bests rajagopal ganesh at facebook

I attended Vidyodaya from 1951-1960. During all those years I was in the hostel. Since 1964, I have been living in the states and Canada. In 2008, while visiting Chennai I took a stroll in my "Vidyo". There was not a building that I recognized, except for the high school. Even the "Heart" was gone.

It stirred such memories in me.

Whatever can I say about my school. It was the best school in Chennai those days, not only for its academics, but also for the sports, art and dramatics. I remember one year the news commentary in the sports section of the "Hindu", with the headline, "V is for Victory". We brought home so many shields. We welcomed back Miss Vimala Appasamy, when she returned from USA after completing her education, around 1952 or 1953. We did a song and dance holding up V--I--M--A--L--A . I remember her beautiful smile and nod every time she passed anyone in the hall way. I even remember Mrs. Appasamy quite well. Anyone remember Miss. R. Jacob, our geography and history teacher? Other teachere I remember were Mrs. Maragatham and, Mrs. Kannamma. Mrs. Gnanakannu was the hostel warden.

I become nostalgic when I think of the morning General Assembly, where a different verse/poem/ essay was read out loud every day of the week, either by a student or Miss Appasamy, for the assembly to hear. The selection was made from different scriptures and faiths. In these days of distrust and antagonism between cultures, perhaps this is what is needed. Several noted dignitaries visited and gave memorable speeches. Before my time, Rabindranath Tagore was said to have visited and planted two trees in front of the hostel. The hostel is no more and I did not see the trees either. How sad that we don't value history!

If anyone recognizes my name, please reply to my E-mail address. I was known as B.V. Usha those days.

Hi Usha,
You must be my senior. All of us five siblings studied in Vidyodaya and I have very fond and nostalgic memories of the school. I always wanted to revisit the school and recollect my childhood memories but it somehow never happened. Just now as I was browsing the net for updated version of the school activities I found your mail and thought I should contact you. I have been seriously trying for the lyrics of our school song "SARANU SARANU DEVA DEVA..." Do you by any chance remember those lyrics. If so can you please pass them on to me at my email address. Nice to read about your memories of the school.
I studied in the school till 1969 and left after passing 8th grade and did my matriculation in BHU.
Regards
Subhadra

Dear Usha
I do remember you somewhat. I was a day scholar (Rema Thomas) passed out in 1961/2. You could not have been more than a year or two senior to me. Was Satya Appaswamy your classmate? I used to follow her around those days.
The sentiments you expressed echo mine exactly. I have always been grateful that my mother decided to send me to Vidyodaya after having sent me to a very 'English' boarding school in Bangalore, Bishop Cottons. I don't think I would have got a sense of what being Indian, both culturally and emotionally, meant if it had not been for my stint in that school. I still keep in touch with a few friends from school and recently went back there with three classmates and enjoyed walking around looking for landmarks.
I now live in Australia and work in publishing.
Warm regards
Rema

Rema Thomas, This is Satya. I was happy to have some news of you. Usha and I have been sharing our memories of Vidyo. We were having a hard time remembering the names of everyone in our class of over 40 girls that graduated in 1960.
Satya

Thank you for your reply. I was a classmate of Satya Appasamy. I had a chat with her a few years back. She lives in Ottawa, Canada.

I was so studious those days that I am afraid that I didn't pay attention to other classes. I was the bell ringer though, through out high school. Someone reminded me that's because I was one of the few girls wearing a watch! I walked around the school two years back and got quite nostalgic. Change is the only constant I guess and we must accept change. But it's so hard. I wanted the time to have stopped in the early sixties. But alas we can't turn the clock back.

Best Wishes

Usha Reddy (B.V.)

some more to my comments on vidyodaya school.

my brother s.nagrajkumar was also in 1950s.

dear friend
i saw your comments about vidyo. i was a student in 1950s. miss james ,miss clarke were my teachers miss jacob .i rememer them.as u said morning assembly was really memorable one.i belinged to gandhi house meant for boys and i was the leader for it.

it was attached to premalaya. other groups were thyagalaya, sathylaya. do u remember these groups?

as u said the beautiful mangrove is missing. i still remember the exciting FETE conducted every year. vimala, mrinalini, shantha, vimala ....reddy(i dont remeber the fulll name) were my class mates.

i remember mrs maragatham a soft natured teacher. miss.jacob was termed as strict teacher in my days. i remember your familiar name. but i am unable to recollect fully. do u remember ms.chinniah pt teacher during your period.

i remember the smile of ms.vimala appasami very well. i lived near appasami's house in habibullah road.

schakrapani

Hello,

Sorry to take so long to reply.

Miss R. Jacob has been on my mind a lot lately. You said that she was termed strict. I used to think so also until I was in her class and just before graduating from high school my interaction with her changed my mind. She was warm and generous towards me. I treasure the letters that she wrote to me during my marriage and after I moved to the USA. I will never forget her.

Miss Chinniah got married and moved to Canada, to Vancouver if I recollect correctly. Miss Appasamy wrote to me about her move, but I was unable to contact her.

Regards,

Usha Reddy (B.V.)

please dont even think to join ur child in this horrrribbbble school!!!!!!!!!i swear that ur child will die of pressure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vidyo is a wonderful place.. Its my home.. I passed out this March.. Missing my Vidyo... In every other school the passing out batch will be depressed to bear the pain of missin their fnds.. But only in Vidyo there is a bond of motherly luv between d school n d student.. Only here students cry to the sands of the school pouring out their luv... I really feel sorry for all those unlucky souls who miss Mother Vidyo

VIDYO is the best school...with good training for students in studies n' extra curriclar...ppl who have not studied there...plz dont give non sense comments..

Vidyodaya school is the most useless school one can go to,the teachers suck big time and so does the school. It totally cuts the students self confidence so please dont ever join your children in that school.

VIDYO is not a school.. Its jus a liitle heaven... Hav u ever studied at Vidyo??? Other schools r jus a block of brick n stone where children mug n score and begin thier life.. But vidyo is jus unique..Once u enter tes of vidyo as a student ur self confidence wil hike makin u a true woman.. May b everyone who is at Vidyo will not b a class topper.. But each one has sufficient knowledge n power to shape thier own life towards success...... Vidyo is of where the children becum all rounders.. If u are'nt lucky enough to make ur child an all rounder then let ur children b a part a building of brick n stone...!!!!

hi

vghss is the most dirtiest scl i've ever seen...high scl teachers are useless..never join dis stupid scl...pls.....d high scl teachers always c partiality...i hate dis scl..

Vidyodaya is a school that emphasises on not only academic excellence but overall development of the students. I can say with pride on behalf of lot of my friends that whatever we are today we owe it to Vidyo. Our teachers were so dedicated and took interest in all students studies and sports and activites.
The festival, candle light ceremomy, sports day, annual day the supports we got from you princi, teachers, excellent coach Mrs victoria are still fresh in our mind.

If u r planning to put ur daughter in this school ..then think ..if u want ur daughter to be the best ..then may b this is the best choice

. For all others who are looking for info on the school.. please make your enquiries with parent of kids who are still in the school.

Its true that we can feel a VIDYODAYAN... Its great to hear wat the proud vidyodayans r doing now... And it really is the only gift we give to mother VIDYO.. The alaya spirit tat the school kindles is simply superb... Im goin to leave the portals of vidyo.. Wish the days nvr roll...I AM PROUD TO HAVE BEEN THE HEAD PERFECT OF SATHYALAYA AND ABOVE ALL TO BE A VIDYODAYAN

When i was a student of vidyodaya in 1950s it was a school with co-education till 5th standard.

It was a memorable part of my life. No uniform for any one. On sports day the girls will be asked to wear green midi and yellow shirt. Not for boys.

Minister p.chidambaram 's wife is an old student (senior to me).
Minister c.subramanyam's daughters were also old students (senior to me).

The founder miss appaswamy was the head mistress and also our english teacher. what a nice lady she was. so smart, so kind, so affectionate like our own mother. she is still a great lady in my life.

The fete festival, candle light ceremomy, sports day, UNO day, are unforgettable. simply enjoyable. so much of liberty , so much of fun and also excellent coaching. ms.asirvatham, ms james, ms.clarke, were all my teachers, ms chinniah was our PT teacher.

It was amazing and a god sent gift to be a student of that great institution.
I am now 60 years old retd DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER of a large PUBLIC SECTOR . I grew up to this status because of the coaching and guidance given in that fine school .

14 years in vidyo is unforgettable. the teachers right from the kinder garden to the higher secondary were awesome.i really miss the traditional candle light ceremony, and the fun filled teachers'day & children's day. the huge campus with lush greenery makes this school special to be in. im really proud to be a VIDYODAYAN..................

I am an alumini of dis awesom skool....................
It was gr8 studyin in dat skool.....
Many of r unforgettable days r in dis skooool....................

LUV U VIDYO 'N' MIASS U SO MUCH

Vidyo is a great place to study at.. Whoever said that there was no exposure, its just a clear sign of them not understanding the freedom given there. Vidyo imparts good education without much pressure and learning is fun with all the extra curricular activities, as one of the earlier posts mentions, UN Day celebrations is a truely amazing experience..

Also you come to school, to learn and cultivate good habits and not to talk to boys. If all that you want is to talk to boys, plz go to a co-ed school that gives you that liberty and vidyo is too sacred for such things..

Proud to be a vidyodayan..

Dear Anonymous,

What makes you think the school doesnt provide exposure? Vidyodaya is a school that emphasises on not only academic excellence but overall development of the students. I can say with pride on behalf of lot of my friends that whatever we are today we owe it to Vidyo. Our teachers were so dedicated and took interest in all stiudents alike. I am sure most schools take a hefty donation.. but not Vidyo.

Have you heard of any school reimbursing the money spent by kids for their project and culturals? Vidyo does it.. Year after year I have had all the money spent for the school reimbursed back to me.. Think about it.. if you are an alumni I wonder why you dont want put your name in there. if you are a student still in Vidyo, when you move out of school you will realise what haven Vidyo was. For all others who are looking for info on the school.. please make your enquiries with parent of kids who are still in the school.

It's one of the oldest schools in Chennai with such a rich heritage.

I saw your comments about the vidyodaya school in which i studied 50 years back . it had co education till 5th std at that time.

Iit was really an unforgettable period as u had written.

The candle lightceremony,Fete, UNO day were thrilling.

Our head mistress was miss paul appaswamy the founder of that great school . she was our english teacher too.

miss daniel, misclarke, miss asirvatham, miss james ,miss chinniah were some of our teachers.

As u said it was really a god sent gift to read in that school. i am now a retd DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER from a large PSU. I write for many web journals, dorrance publications, atlanta publications, lulu publications ,TCC news which are located all over the world. Recently i have authored a book titled "everybody has two mothers".

We have a big GOHALA in neelavaram , udupi ,where 1000 cows which are aged ,abandoned, sick and saved from slaughter houses and protected.

All the vedas and the scriptures say that service to cows fetches thegreatest punya..

i was really happy to see your comments on VIDYODAYA my favorite school.
. good luck. god bless u.

S.Chakrapani BE,MBA

Aint got no doubt about what a lovely woman Vidyo has made you to be!!!.

Keep it going!!!!

If you have studied in some other school before !then dont select this school .. campus is big .and all but nothing gr8 abt the place exposure is vey low and being an all girls school the principal is so biased ..she mit even put a rule that u will have to spk with only girls while u study in the school ...
if u r planning to put ur daughter in this school ..then think ..if u want ur daughter to be a mediocre ..then may b this is the best choice

Having passed out of Vidyo in 97' (Studied there for 2 years), i had earlier been a student of Sacred Heart's Convent & Velankanni School in Chennai. Trust me, i fared poorly in my studies all through, was very low on confidence, hurt, shy and in my own shell. Luck favoured me when i got the opportunity to study in Vidyo. Not only did the school bring out the very best in me interms of education/grades etc, it also brought out my inner strengths, great friends, excellent teachers, fabulous studying environment, sports & the list goes on!

We were fortunate to be blessed with great teachers, classrooms were not crowded & our teachers ensured that individual attention was provided to each one of us. Group studying was greatly encouraged which helped me make new friends (we are still in touch), enjoy life & evolve in to a strong woman that I am today!

I am sorry YOUR experience with the school has not been satisfactory, however going by the ration of good/bad comments on this site - we all have our answers on the school. Vidyo Rocks!!!!!

Yes this comment/review to some extent is reality

Especiially the State Board section of Vidyodaya is not so good the quality is almost equivalent to a Govt. school. In high school level they supply Tamilnadu Text Book Society books to girls which are poor in quality of content.

Of course, for Middle Class & lower middle class who can't afford term fees and donations, the school will be a real help.

There will not be much pressure on kids to perform. The school seems to be still in 1970s n 80s.
